Super Simple Garters

copyright Rachel Sanfordlyn Shreckengast of WedFrugal.com

Making your own garters can be extremely simple and very inexpensive. The trick to keep it simple is in the type of lace you use. By using a piece of lace that already has the covered elastic attached, you save many steps in the process of making the garter. Once your find this type of lace (available at most craft stores), you simply have to assemble the garter. As for the price, I spent $1.99 on the lace and .77 cents on the simple bows (with pearls already attached), which comes to a grand total of $2.76 for two garters. In other words, each garter cost me only $1.38 to make. I want to point out that these are NOT sale prices, I actually paid retail. The lowest price I've ever seen on a garter is $6.99, but that was clearanced. Most often, you will find them for $9.95 and above. Obviously, this is a very simple example. You can also buy this type of lace with wider widths and double or triple rows of lace. As for the notions, you can buy much fancier notions than I've shown here (huge bows, pearl heart shapes, charms used in jewelry making, etc). As with most of my crafts, I try to show you the simplest version and leave it up to you whether you would like to add on to the ideas I've presented.

Supplies:

- 1 1/2 inch or larger lace (see picture above) with elastic at top
- scissors
- sewing thread
- needle
- notions
- glue gun (optional)

Instructions:

Measure lace to fit around your thigh. Add 1/2 inch to your measurement and cut lace. Sew ends of lace together with a 1/4 inch seam. This is your basic garter. You can now add various notions (such as bows, pearl sprays, silk or satin flowers, charms, etc) in order to dress up your garter. If you would like to make two garters (one to keep and one to toss), it's possible to make this craft take even less time for the garter you want to toss. "Toss" garters are meant to be decorative and you can use a hot glue gun instead of sewing. I do recommend sewing the garter you will wear as it will hold up better if sewn.
